Last Thursday, the Broome County Legislature hosted a public hearing to discuss next year’s proposed budget, where several residents got up to publicly oppose increased funding for the Broome County Jail. If passed, the 2026 budget, released late September, would allocate around $55 million to Broome County Sheriff’s Office, a nearly 15 percent increase from the $47.8 million allocated in this year’s budget.

Broome County Sheriff Fred Akshar has signed an agreement with Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) to allow correction officers to serve warrants to inmates wanted by federal immigration authorities. New York Association of Counties calls for quicker transfer of state ready inmates
TOWN OF DICKINSON, N.Y. (WBNG) -- The New York State Association of Counties recently called on the state to take immediate action in transferring state ready inmates from County jails to State ails. Broome County Sheriff Fred Akshar said the Broome County jail is currently holding around 80 state readies, costing $274 per day with $100 in daily reimbursements by the state.
